Valtteri Bottas Gets Turkish F1 GP Pole
~1.1 mins read

Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time in qualifying for the Turkish Grand Prix, but he will not start from pole position due to a grid penalty for switching engines. His Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas, who finished second, will start on pole, alongside Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. Hamilton will start from 11th due to a 10-place penalty. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari was fourth, and Pierre Gasly of AlphaTauri was fifth.

Hamilton’s Mercedes team was concerned about engine reliability in the remaining seven races, so they decided to install the new engine – their fourth, one more than the regulations allow – at a track where they hope their championship leader can come through the field and limit the points loss to his title rival Verstappen.

The British citizen stands a good probability of succeeding. He’s been fast all weekend, taking the lead in both of the first two practice sessions, and he finished second in a GP2 race here in 2006 after recovering from a spin that dropped him to 19th place.

Verstappen successfully mitigated the damage caused by the installation of a new power unit by gaining second place after starting last on the grid, while Hamilton took a two-point lead. Red Bull, who had led the constructors’ championship early in the season, is now 33 points behind Mercedes.

WHY I LEFT BANKYW'S EME- SINGER NIYIOLA
    ~1.3 mins read
Singer Eniola Akinbo, better known as Niyola, has opened up on why she left Empire Mates Entertainment (EME) headed by Banky W.

Niyola, in a recent chat with Chude Jideonwo, faulted the defunct record label for marketing her wrongly because of their business strategy.

According to her, “When a female artiste wants to do music, the first thing any man will think of as a businessman is being sexy. I’m sexy, I’m smart, I love God, but it is also important to find a person or people who understand that.

I think that to be fair on the label, a lot of times, they just didn’t see it, they are businessman and did things as far their knowledge carried them…I should have been marketed as who I was and not just as a girl that is pretty and that can sing.

Leaving EME wasn’t a happy event. It was not happy in the sense that when you invest time, your blood and all into something, you want to see it do what it’s expected to do.

It was a great time being in EME, I’m not going to lie but I want to believe that it served its purpose. I was saying to someone yesterday that, not everybody is meant to, in the Nigerian term ‘blow’.

If you’re supposed to appeal to a hundred people, if your circle of influence is within 10 people, you will not exceed that, but if your influence is supposed to impact these 10 people, then that’s what you should focus on. It’s not everybody that’s meant to appeal to everybody. And so, I feel like being on EME helped me to realize that.”

WHY CANNABIS IS STILL ILLEGAL IN NIGERIA
    ~1.4 mins read
Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brigadier-General Buba Marwa, has explained why cannabis cannot be legalised in Nigeria right now.

Speaking at an event in Akure, Ondo State, the NDLEA Chief Executive said, the proliferation of illicit drugs often engenders a pattern of crime, chaos and conflict. In the advanced world, it is the driver of high crime rate and violent killings in the inner cities. In developing or Third World countries, it is the escalator of strife, pogroms and civil war, and has played a big role in countries torn to pieces by tribal war.

According to Femi Babafemi, NDLEA’s spokesperson, Marwa said, “We have seen narco-terrorism in countries like Colombia and Mexico where drug cartels are law unto themselves and are as powerful, if not more powerful, than the State. So, there are real cases, not scenarios, of where and how illicit substances played a role in a societys rapid descent into chaos and tettering on the brink of a failed state.

So the pertinent question for us today is: Has drugs played any role in the festering insecurity in Nigeria? The answer is yes. Of this we have ample evidence.

Considering the intractable burden of insecurity facing the country, we do not have the luxury of allowing a narcotic economy to take root and thrive in our society. Africa, nay, Nigeria has enough problems without adding the burden of narco-terrorism.

Of all the known illicit substances, cannabis sativa is the only one that is native to Nigeria and it is the most abused of all illicit drugs, and from the findings of the National drug Survey of 2018, cannabis is becoming a national albatross.

As far as NDLEA is concerned, cannabis remains an illicit substance. The Agency shall always canvass against its cultivation, possession, trafficking and sales, and use. And offenders will face the wrath of the law. And, if I may add, our conviction rate is 90% successful.”
