President Tinubu Has Saved Nigeria From Economic Bl££ding — Wale Edun
~1.7 mins read

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun has said that the initiative of President Bola Tinubu stopped the country from bleeding (referring to stoppage of imported fuel) which he said was costing five per cent of the GDP of the country every year.

The Minister was speaking on Monday in Bauchi during the opening ceremony of the National Council on Finance and Economic Development (NACOFED) with the theme: Fostering Economic Growth in Challenging Times.

He said that President Bola Tinubu’s administration inherited the assets and the liabilities and there was no looking back but in charting a way forward, decisions needed to be made in order to stabilize the economy.

“When you try to look at where we are now, essentially, the major macro economic reforms that are in place. The President has stopped the bleeding that was costing five per cent of the GDP of the country every year that was adding no value except to a few people and of course neighbouring countries that were benefiting from what was happening with the fuel subsidy and as well, a related foreign exchange subsidy.

The benefits were saved for just a few and a mass of Nigerians were not getting any benefits from those structures. They have been removed and the federation account will benefit from increased flow of resources to the federal, states and local governments and so much more can be done in terms of investing not just in infrastructure but in social services like education, health.

The road is clear for private sector investors and as we know, we are now back in business on the road to industrialization, based on what is happening in the petroleum refining sector.

Crude oil is not just being shipped abroad, it’s being refined locally to give petroleum products and raw materials for industry. We should be encouraged that we have a more stable, sustainable macro economic environment that is friendly to investors, that will make it possible not only for them to produce competitively for the domestic market but also to export,” he said.

The Minister also expressed appreciation to Governor Bala Mohammed for hosting the conference and the organizers for making the conference a reality. On his part, Governor Bala Mohammed assured his visitors that he would spare no efforts to ensure that the gathering surpasses expectations.

Support Ifeanyi Ubah’s Widow To Succeed Him As Senator — Ali Ndume Begs Senate
~1.7 mins read

Borno South Senator Ali Ndume has appealed to the upper chamber to support the widow of late Ifeanyi Ubah to replace her husband as the senator representing Anambra South Senatorial District.

Mr Ndume made the appeal on Tuesday during the valedictory session organised by the Senate in honour of the late senator.

Mr Ubah, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), died at the age of 52 in a London hospital after a brief illness in July. He defected to the APC from the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in October 2023 and declared his interest in contesting the Anambra 2025 governorship election.

Until his death, Mr Ubah was the chairperson of the Senate Committee on Petroleum Downstream. Kano South Senator Kawu Sumaila has since been appointed to replace him. During the valedictory service, Mr Ndume appealed to his colleagues to ensure that the late Mr Ubah’s widow replaced her husband to continue the senator’s legacies.

The Borno senator recounted that some deceased senators were succeeded by their wives and relations. In contrast, others became members of the upper chamber under the influence of their husbands and fathers. He appealed that this should be extended to Mr Ubah’s widow. “It happened before. Chuba Okadigbo was a great politician. When he died, years after, his wife, the widow Margery, sitting around here.

Our first lady, Oluremi Tinubu, came to the Senate by the virtue of the people of Lagos and her husband who is the president who served two terms… They insisted that she should go for third term. In fact, she told me that her dream was to be a pastor. “Abiru’s father was a great senator in 1979. Right here is Yar’Adua? Everybody knows Yar’Adua (Katsina Central Senator). Senator (lyabo) Obasanjo, if you remember, is the daughter of General Obasanjo. Sitting in front of me is Dafinone, his father, was a great senator,” he said.

Mr Ndume, therefore, appealed to his colleagues to support Mr Ubah’s wife in getting her late husband’s seat. “Finally, Mr. President, my appeal to you and distinguished colleagues, his wife, fortunately, is 50 years or so, a wonderful wife. Let us support the family to have a spirit representative of Ifeanyi here in the chamber when election of Anambra of the senatorial district that he represents,” he said. “What I want to appeal to you, Mr President, is, let us keep his spirit, aspirations of ifeanyi alive,” Mr Ndume added.
