Kroger Stock Soars Amid 'Positive Customer Trends'
~0.9 mins read

Kroger (KR) shares surged Thursday after it better-than-expected adjusted profit for the second quarter.

The supermarket chain posted adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $0.93, topping the $0.91 consensus estimate of analysts polled by Visible Alpha. Diluted EPS of $0.64 and revenue of $33.91 billion missed expectations.

Kroger affirmed most of its full-year outlook, while lifting the floor for its same-store sales growth projection, excluding fuel, to 0.75% from 0.25%. Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Todd Foley said the chain's "positive customer trends are driving sales momentum that we expect to continue in the second half of the year."

Kroger did not provide a substantial update to its progress in addressing regulatory concerns over its $24.6 billion merger with Albertsons (ACI). Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Rodney McMullen said the company is "confident in the facts and the strength of our position" as Kroger fights the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)'s attempts to halt the merger.

Kroger shares rose more than 6% to $54.80 in late-morning trading Thursday and are up about 20% this year.

McDonald's $5 Value Meal Is Sticking Around
~0.9 mins read

McDonald's (MCD) said its “Summer of Value” is extending into fall.

The golden arches are keeping in place the popular $5 value meal promotion—it comes with a McDouble or McChicken sandwich, drink, french fries and a 10-piece McNuggets—into December.

The offering was expected to run for just four weeks following its June 25 launch, but many locations kept it going into August. A memo from Chief Marketing Officer Tariq Hassan and National Field President Myra Doria in July said the promotion “is meeting the objective of driving guests back to our restaurants," according to .

McDonald’s second-quarter results, reported in July, missed expectations, but the company said it has seen sales growth among lower-income consumers during the value meal's cycle. Other food chains have launched similar deals, seeking to get inflation-weary diners in the door with options emphasizing value.

Shares of McDonalds were little changed Thursday. They're up about 15% since the $5 meal promotion launched, and down slightly for the year.

IGP Bans Edo State Security Network from Participating in September 21 Governorship Election

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive prohibiting the Edo State Security Network (ESSN) from participating in the upcoming governorship election scheduled for September 21, 2024. The announcement was made during a stakeholders' meeting organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Benin, Edo State.

In his address, the IGP emphasized that the responsibility for maintaining law and order during the election would be placed solely on the Nigeria Police Force, with support from other national security agencies. He underscored that no private or state-run security outfits would be permitted to operate during or after the election.

Egbetokun also stated that security aides assigned to high-profile individuals (VIPs) would be temporarily withdrawn for the duration of the election. He highlighted several election-related offenses, warning that anyone found in violation of these laws would face severe legal consequences.

"We will strictly enforce the Electoral Act and all other relevant laws to ensure a peaceful and orderly election. No acts of hooliganism, violence, or possession of weapons will be tolerated. Anyone caught will be charged accordingly," Egbetokun warned.

Speaking on voter security, the IGP assured the public that the police, along with other national security agencies, are fully prepared to ensure that the election is conducted in a secure and peaceful environment.

Adding to the discussion, the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, informed stakeholders that efforts were being made to distribute uncollected Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) across Edo State. He stated that the commission had initiated the collection process in all 18 local government areas in preparation for the election.

Prof. Yakubu reaffirmed INEC's commitment to conducting a free, fair, and credible election, urging eligible voters to pick up their PVCs and participate in the democratic process.

The upcoming Edo State governorship election has drawn significant attention, and security remains a top priority for both INEC and law enforcement agencies as they work to ensure a smooth electoral process.

Your Excellency, as you may recall, I was offered an appointment to serve as your Special Assistant. Artist, on 6th January 2023. I accepted the offer because I saw it as a call to service and an opportunity to showcase my talents. Regrettably. I have not been able to achieve any of these things. Aside from the fact that I don’t have a specific schedule of duty, circumstances have not availed me the opportunity to perform my responsibilities maximally.

Therefore, since my appointment is based on public trust. I cannot continue to break that trust by taking a salary for doing nothing.

As an Islamic cleric, it is against my beliefs, and I haven’t been at peace with myself. So. I want my salary to be stopped immediately.
