Cryptocurrency Market News: Tornado Cash Developer Sentenced To Over 5 Years In Prison
~2.8 mins read

This past week, a major conviction occurred in a crypto technology case, as a developer of privacy-preserving software was convicted for money laundering in the Netherlands. The CEO of digital asset manager Grayscale also resigned, and a report suggested the crypto industry could have a bigger political impact than ever through lobbying efforts.

Tornado Cash developer Alexey Pertsev was reportedly convicted of money laundering by a Dutch judge on Tuesday, and received a 64-month prison sentence.

An indictment revealed that between July 9, 2019, to Aug. 10, 2022, Pertsev consistently engaged in money laundering, and ignored suspect origins of illicit transactions on Tornado Cash.

Following the verdict, the 31-year-old Russian was taken into custody. Pertsev can appeal the sentence, but the time he has already spent in detention since his arrest in August 2022 will not be deducted from his prison term.

The case may influence upcoming trials of other Tornado Cash developers, including Roman Storm and Roman Semenov, who also face money laundering and sanctions violations charges in the U.S.

Grayscale CEO Michael Sonnenshein is stepping down, according to a release Monday. The company said Sonnenshein, who played a key role in the launch of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), is leaving the company to "pursue other interests."

Goldman Sachs Head of Strategy for Asset and Wealth Management Peter Mintzberg will take over the role on August 15. Mintzberg brings over 20 years of experience from roles at BlackRock, OppenheimerFunds, and Invesco. Until Mintzberg steps in, Grayscale CFO Edward McGee will serve as interim CEO.

Barry Silbert, CEO of Grayscale parent Digital Currency Group, praised Sonnenshein's leadership in transforming the Bitcoin Trust into an ETF. Earlier this year, Grayscale was among the firms that successfully listed a spot Bitcoin ETF in the U.S. after challenging repeated denials by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The crypto industry is ramping up its lobbying efforts in Washington, aiming to influence the upcoming U.S. elections, CoinDesk reported.

By investing heavily in pro-crypto candidates, the industry is hoping to make progress in establishing a more favorable regulatory framework. Notably, crypto-focused political action committees (PACs) like Fairshake have raised substantial funds to support candidates sympathetic to crypto. These efforts have already impacted key races, reportedly helping thwart the re-election of Congresswoman Katie Porter, who has been critical of crypto.

Fairshake also contributes to party-affiliated PACs like Defend American Jobs and Protect Progress, and supports both Republican and Democratic candidates who back crypto-friendly policies.

U.S. lawmakers are preparing for a vote on the Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act (Fit21), deemed crucial by major crypto companies for the future of the U.S. crypto industry.

Fit21 aims to establish safeguards against risky behavior and ensure consumer protection in cryptocurrency custody and bankruptcy, providing clearer guidelines for the industry. The upcoming vote could also determine whether the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) will become a major crypto regulator, and delineate its jurisdiction from that of the SEC.

The Crypto Council for Innovation, which includes industry giants like Coinbase (COIN), Kraken, and Andreessen Horowitz, wrote a letter last week advocating for the bill, emphasizing the importance of the legislation for supporting the growth of digital assets and maintaining U.S. leadership in financial innovation.

Dell Technologies (DELL) released a slew of announcements Monday related to artificial intelligence (AI), ranging from new AI PCs to expanded data center offerings as the company deepens its partnerships with AI leaders like Nvidia (NVDA) and Microsoft (MSFT).

Dell said it's expanding its AI offerings in partnership with Nvidia with "new server, edge, workstation, solutions and services advancements."

The company announced the new Dell PowerEdge XE9680L server which "offers direct liquid cooling and eight NVIDIA Blackwell Tensor Core GPUs for fast processing in a compact form factor," addressing power efficiency and cooling concerns associated with running demanding AI workloads.

Nvidia's Blackwell platform was first announced in March and is expected to be available through some of the chipmaker's partners, like Dell, this year.

Dell also highlighted Dell NativeEdge, "the first edge orchestration platform that automates the delivery of NVIDIA AI Enterprise software, including NVIDIA NIM."

Dell announced new AI PCs as well, some with Copilot+ that run on Qualcomm (QCOM) processors and are equipped with Microsoft's AI features. The company's announcement came the same day as Microsoft's own.

Dell said the new laptops are "targeted at professionals and consumers" with "built-in AI with game-changing performance and exceptional battery life" to "help users easily manage their tasks and workflows through local computing and processing across the GPU, CPU and NPU."

The company introduced five new AI PCs, XPS 13, Inspiron 14 Plus, Inspiron 14, Latitude 7455, and Latitude 5455. The XPS 13 and new Latitude laptops are equipped with Microsoft's Copilot+. The XPS 13 and Inspiron 14 Plus laptops were available for preorder on Monday, while the Latitude 7455, Latitude 5455, and Inspiron 14 devices are to be available in the coming months.

The company also unveiled Dell Generative AI Solution for Digital Assistants and Implementation Services, which is available now in North America.

Dell shares closed 2.7% lower at $145.45 Monday. They've gained over 90% since the start of the year.

Microsoft Unveils New 'Copilot+ PCs' With AI Features—Here’s What You Need To Know
~1.5 mins read

Microsoft (MSFT) announced a new category of Windows PCs designed for artificial intelligence (AI) called Copilot+ PCs at an event Monday, ahead of the company's developer conference, Microsoft Build, on Tuesday. The company is expected to provide more details at the conference.

"Copilot+ PCs are the fastest, most intelligent Windows PCs ever built," the company said in a release, adding that "Copilot+ PCs will enable you to do things you can’t on any other PC."

Microsoft said Copilot+ PCs will be offered through Microsoft's Surface line as well as its original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partners including Dell Technologies (DELL), Lenovo, Samsung, HP (HPQ), Acer, and Asus. Microsoft said that Copilot+ PCs, which are priced starting at $999, can be pre-ordered starting Monday and will become available June 18. The devices will run on Qualcomm (QCOM) chips.

Microsoft said the Windows AI PCs "outperform Apple’s MacBook Air by up to 58% in sustained multithreaded performance, all while delivering all-day battery life." Apple (AAPL) announced a new iPad model powered by the recently released M4 chip earlier in the month, in the iPhone maker's push into AI devices.

Microsoft's Copilot, which is "connected to and enhanced by the large language models (LLMs) running in our Azure Cloud in concert with small language models (SLMs)," is capable of running AI workloads through neural processor units (NPUs) built into the tech.

Microsoft also announced a feature called "Recall" that allows users to virtually access everything seen or done on the computer "in a way that feels like having photographic memory." The company said that the new PCs would have access to OpenAI's latest model GPT-4o as well.

Microsoft shares closed1.2% higher at $425.34 Monday, contributing to the stock's gain of over 13% since the start of the year.
