NCC Launches A Device Management System To Regulate All Mobile Devices In Nigeria
~1.4 mins read

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently launched the Device Management System (NCC-DMS), which is a thorough Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) designed to oversee and control mobile devices that connect to the country’s communication networks.

The new ‘Type Approval Business Rule 2024’ stipulates that all Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in the country are required to connect to the system as mandated by the Commission. It stated that the initiative is designed to ensure stricter control over mobile devices, enhance security, and promote compliance with established regulatory standards.

The Commission added that the NCC-DMS will act as a central database for tracking devices across all Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in Nigeria. By registering and monitoring device access, the NCC said it seeks to curb the use of unapproved devices and prevent issues such as phone theft and fraudulent activities involving mobile devices.

According to the Commission, all mobile network operators are required to connect to the NCC-DMS and mirror network-related policies configured by the NCC. This, it said ensures that network operators adhere to the same standards and policies, fostering a uniform approach to device regulation. “NCC-DMS shall acquire the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) of all devices latching to the communication network and synchronise with International databases of IMEI repositories.

NCC-DMS shall maintain a registry of all communication devices available in the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the Commission stated in the Business Rule.

It added that individuals would be able to register their mobile devices, but the number of devices allowed for registration will be limited and determined by the Commission. Additionally, device suppliers will be responsible for registering type-approved devices on the NCC-DMS.

All MNOs are also required to synchronise their Equipment Identity Registers (EIRs) with the NCC-DMS, ensuring that mobile devices accessing their networks are compliant with NCC regulations. Device registration on the NCC-DMS will require payment of fees, distinct from type approval fees.

This fee structure will be applied to every device registered, making it a necessary step for suppliers and individuals alike.

Apple Stock Is Falling After Its IPhone Event. Analysts Are Unfazed.
~1.1 mins read

Apple (AAPL) shares fell following the unveiling of the iPhone 16, Apple Watch Series 10 and AirPods 4.

Shares of the tech titan's stock were down less than 1% following the much-anticipated "It's Glowtime" event, slipping as the benchmark S&P 500 rose about 1%. Apple's shares have fallen in recent days alongside other tech shares, though they're up more than 10% this year.

Historically, Apple's stock price has tended to underperform the market on the day of an iPhone launch event, Morgan Stanley analysts wrote. Growth should come "as the introduction of the iPhone 16 and Apple Intelligence helps to unlock pent-up demand," the analysts said.

Shares could rose if the first iPhone designed specifically with Apple Intelligence in mind ushers in "Cupertino’s biggest upgrade cycle in its history," as analysts at Wedbush predicted over the weekend.

Globally, about 300 million iPhones have not been upgraded in more than four years, which Wedbush says could mean more than 240 million iPhone units sold in fiscal 2025.

Eleven of 16 analysts surveyed by Visible Alpha have a Buy rating for Apple, with an average price target of just over $244. That's a 10% premium over Friday's closing price.

Man Posing As NNPCL Director In EFCC Custody For Alleged N100m Fra¥d
~1.8 mins read

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has brought charges against Ibrahim Nuhu Shuaibu, accusing him of a N100 million fra¥d scheme, Nairameteics reports.

Shuaibu, who is alleged to have impersonated a Group Executive Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), was arraigned before Justice Darius Khobo of the Kaduna State High Court.

The EFCC has charged Shuaibu on seven counts, which include criminal breach of trust, impersonation, and obtaining money under false pretenses-EFCC stated in a post on X.

The charges date back to incidents beginning in 2017, when Shuaibu, under the alias Ishaku Abdulrazak, allegedly conspired with a now-deceased accomplice, Iliya Garba, to defraud victims by promising to supply petroleum products. According to the EFCC, Shuaibu convinced one victim, Faisal Safiyanu, to transfer over N47 million to his account after falsely claiming he would supply petroleum products. Despite receiving the funds, Shuaibu failed to deliver the products, nor did he refund the money, leading to his prosecution by the EFCC.

One of the counts reads: “That you, Nuhu Ibrahim Shuaibu (a.k.a Ishaku Abdulrazak) and lIya Garba (now deceased), sometime in 2017 in Kaduna, within the judicial division of this honourable court, did conspire to obtain money under false pretenses, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 8(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006, and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.”

Another count specifies that Shuaibu, in 2018, fraudulently obtained N47,050,000 from Safiyanu under the pretense of supplying petroleum products.

The charge notes that Shuaibu knew his claims were false, yet proceeded to defraud the victim. This act is in violation of Section 1(1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006, and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same legislation.

During his arraignment, Shuaibu pleaded not guilty to all seven charges. Following this, the prosecution, led by M. Lawal, requested the court to set a date for trial. However, Shuaibu’s defense counsel, AbdulKareem Audu, did not file a bail application, prompting the presiding judge, Justice Darius Khobo, to order the defendant’s remand in EFCC custody pending the trial.

The EFCC has been investigating Shuaibu’s activities since 2017 when he first presented himself as a senior NNPCL official. Posing as a Group Executive Director, Shuaibu reportedly convinced his victim that he could facilitate the procurement of over 2,000 litres of petroleum products. The victim, believing Shuaibu’s claims to be genuine, transferred funds to him in tranches.

However, after receiving the money, Shuaibu neither fulfilled his promise to supply the products nor returned the funds to the victim.

Australian PM Announces Plan To Ban Children From Social Media
~0.7 mins read

Australia’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, has announced a plan to ban children from using social media.

The Prime Minister, on Tuesday, said that the government would introduce legislation in 2024 to enforce a minimum age for access to social media and other relevant digital platforms.

“We know social media is causing social h3rm, and it is taking kids away from real friends and real experiences,” he said in a statement. He said that the legislation would be informed by engagement with the states and territories, but his preference is to set the minimum age at 16 years.

According to a poll conducted by state broadcaster the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in August, 61 per cent of Australians supported restricting social media access to those younger than 17. At the same time, Peter Malinauskas, the premier of South Australia, commissioned former federal judge Robert French to explore legal pathways to ban children younger than 14 from social media.
The prime minister said that the federal government would consider Robert French’s review when drafting the legislation.

Actor Tyrese Gibson Arrested Over Unpaid Child Support, Ordered To Pay $73k To Avoid Jail
~0.8 mins read

Tyrese Gibson has been taken into custody after he failed to pay the monthly $10,000 child support payments a judge ordered him to make to his ex Samantha Lee.

Gibson – who shares five-year-old daughter Soraya with Lee – was held in contempt of court Monday morning during a hearing over the matter.

Judge Kevin Farmer was upset over Gibson’s refusal to make the monthly $10,000 child support payments the actor was ordered to begin paying in April 2023. Farmer held Gibson in contempt of court Monday. And the ‘Fast & Furious’ actor was placed in handcuffs by the bailiff and taken out of the courtroom.

The judge offered Gibson the chance to resolve the issue and avoid jail time if he paid $73,000. That figure includes Samantha’s attorney fees, which total $7,500. Gibson had been making payments to Lee. However, it has not been the $10,000 figure the judge ordered him to begin making last year.

Tyrese Gibson has been paying his ex around $2,200 every month as of 2023. Insiders said Gibson is currently in the process of sorting out the $73K payment
