What You Need To Know Ahead Of Novo Nordisk Earnings Wednesday
~1.8 mins read

Novo Nordisk (NVO) is set to report earnings for the second quarter on Wednesday morning after a first half in which the company's market of potential customers for its Ozempic and Wegovy weight-loss drugs expanded.

Analysts project that Novo Nordisk's drugs will help lift the Danish drugmaker's revenue and income. Analyst estimates compiled by Visible Alpha project Novo Nordisk will report a year-over-year jump of about 26% in revenue to 68.47 billion Danish kroner ($9.9 billion), with a rise of nearly 10% in profit to 21.27 billion kroner ($3.08 billion).

In the first quarter, Novo Nordisk said sales of Ozempic and Wegovy rose 25% year over year and said that demand would likely continue to outpace supply for the rest of 2024.

The weight-loss drug sales led Novo Nordisk to lift its guidance for the year, projecting revenue growth between 19% to 27%, slightly up from a previous projection of 18% to 26%.

Investors could expect that guidance to rise again when the company reports Wednesday. Novo Nordisk said in May that its updated figures included expectations that the drugs would face supply constraints over the course of 2024, and that revenue could grow further depending on the company's investments in production capacity.

Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly (LLY) have both said that the booming popularity of their weight-loss drugs has meant their supply will likely lag demand as they work to increase production. For its part, Novo Nordisk has made acquisitions and investments to bolster its production capabilities for the drugs, including a $4.1 billion plan to expand its facilities in North Carolina by 2029.

Ozempic and Wegovy also have been introduced to new markets like China over the first half of the year and studies over the last year have also led regulators to support updating the drugs' labels to include evidence that they can have positive cardiovascular impacts along with their weight-loss benefits.

Wegovy also has received approval to start being sold in Australia, further expanding the drug's market, reported Thursday.

American depositary receipts (ADRs) of Novo Nordisk finished Thursday roughly flat and about 28% above where they started the year.

Just In: #EndBadGovernance Protest: The Military Will Step In If Breaches Continue — CDS
~1.8 mins read

Christopher Musa, chief of defence staff (CDS), says the military will intervene if the ongoing nationwide #EndbadGovernance protests persist violently.

Musa spoke in reaction to the vandalisation and looting of properties that characterised the protest in many parts of the country on Thursday.

In Kano, protesters looted the newly built Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) Industrial Park, setting parts of it ablaze. The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centre was scheduled for commissioning next week. Some youths were seen making away with desktop computers, chairs, keyboards, and other appliances from the centre.

The protest, which has also turned ugly in Yobe, Lagos, Borno, Gombe, and Abuja, has left at least 14 people reported d3ad. Organisers have labelled the nationwide demonstrations as ’10 Days of Rage’ and #EndBadGovernance.

In a press conference on Friday, Musa urged protesters to recognise that destruction is counterproductive and would only set the nation aback. “We should realise that these destructions and monies have to be used—monies for development will have to be used to develop these things so we can move forward, and so instead of doing that, we should come together to make sure nothing is destroyed. The statement has already been passed to the local, state, and federal governments.”

Musa commended the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for its attempt to establish order but added that the military would be forced to step in if the violence persists. “We want to warn those that are recalcitrant, those that don’t want to listen, that we will not fold our hands and see our country destroyed,” the CDS said.

“We will take action, and the action that we’ll take will be professional. Anyone who is caught will be taken to the courts to be dealt with. Let us avoid anything that will bring mayhem within our communities. We have seen the level of destruction that has been carried out just yesterday, and so you can imagine if this continues for so long. The armed forces and the entire military security agencies will not stand by and see that to continue.”

The military chief also asked the media to lessen coverage of the protests, saying some protesters are only looking for screen time. “I noticed throughout yesterday all the stations were hooked up on the occasion. This is not election, don’t give them that coverage because some of them are just looking for moments of being on the screen,” he said.

Musa appealed to Nigerians to be patient with the government, saying policies have been enacted and actions have been taken to ensure there is relief from the economic hardship.

4 Key Takeaways From Apple's Earnings Call
~2.5 mins read

After Apple (AAPL) reported fiscal third-quarter results that topped analysts' expectations, CEO Tim Cook gave investors an update on the iPhone maker's artificial intelligence (AI) opportunities, outlook, and more in the company’s earnings call Thursday.

Amid speculation about when new AI features will be released after Apple unveiled Apple Intelligence in June, Cook suggested the new features will become available to users over time rather than all at once.

The CEO said the company plans to roll out Apple Intelligence to U.S. English users in the fall, and then "proceed with more functionality, more features, and more languages and regions" in the next year.

Cook also said Apple plans to integrate ChatGPT features into iPhones by the end of the 2024 calendar year through its partnership with OpenAI.

Apple provided developers a first look at Apple Intelligence ahead of reporting earnings through the beta version of iOS 18.1.

Cook said that while it may be difficult to project upgrade rates now, the company is "very excited" about the "level of value" Apple Intelligence is expected to bring users.

Apple Intelligence will run on iPhone 15 and newer devices, which could drive consumers to upgrade for the AI features.

Cook also reported Apple's installed user base reached a record high, in what could add fuel to the scale of a potential AI-driven upgrade cycle.

Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 16 with iOS 18 in September, with AI capabilities to follow.

After Apple reported record-high revenue from its services segment in the third quarter, the company said it expects double-digit growth to another record high in the fourth quarter.

Apple reported its services revenue climbed to $24.21 billion in the third quarter, up 14% from the year-ago period. By contrast, product sales grew about 1.6% as iPad and Mac sales rose, while iPhone sales declined close to 1%.

The company reported total revenue of $85.78 billion for the quarter, representing 5% year-over-year growth.

Despite reporting a year-over-year drop in China sales, Cook said there were signs of improvement in the region compared to the first half of fiscal 2024, suggesting recent pricing discount efforts could be paying off.

The company reported a 6.5% year-over-year decline in sales in the China region, though Cook said around 3% was currency-related.

Cook said iPhone 15 sales since the device's launch were outperforming what the company recorded for the iPhone 14 in the greater China region, offering what could be a positive indicator ahead of the upcoming iPhone 16.

Apple shares were little changed in extended trading Thursday following the company's earnings call. They've gained over 13% since the start of the year through Thursday's close.
