THE EAGLE
~4.8 mins read
Eagle is the common name for many large birds of prey of the family Accipitridae. Eagles belong to several groups of genera, some of which are closely related. Most of the 60 species of eagle are from Eurasia and Africa. Outside this area, just species can be found2 in North America, 9 in Central and South America, and 3 in Australia. It is nicknamed the king of all birds.

Eagles normally build their nests, called eyries, in tall trees or on high cliffs. Many species lay two eggs, but the older, larger chick frequently kills its younger sibling once it has hatched. The dominant chick tends to be a female, as they are bigger than the male. The parents take no action to stop the killing.

Due to the size and power of many eagle species, they are ranked at the top of the food chain as apex predatorsin the avian world. The type of prey varies by genus. TheHaliaeetus and Ichthyophaga eagles prefer to capture fish, though the species in the former often capture various animals, especially other water birds, and are powerful kleptoparasites of other birds. The snake and serpent eagles of the genera CircaetusTerathopius, andSpilornis predominantly prey on the great diversity ofsnakes found in the tropics of Africa and Asia. The eagles of the genus Aquila are often the top birds of prey in open habitats, taking almost any medium-sizedvertebrate they can catch. Where Aquila eagles are absent, other eagles, such as the buteonine black-chested buzzard-eagle of South America, may assume the position of top raptorial predator in open areas. Many other eagles, including the species-rich genus Spizaetus, live predominantly in woodlands and forest. These eagles often target various arboreal or ground-dwelling mammals and birds, which are often unsuspectingly ambushed in such dense, knotty environments. Hunting techniques differ among the species and genera, with some individual eagles having engaged in quite varied techniques based their environment and prey at any given time. Most eagles grab prey without landing and take flight with it, so the prey can be carried to a perch and torn apart.

Groups

Eagles are often informally divided into four groups.

The snake eagles are placed in the subfamily Circaetinae. The fish eagles, booted eagles, and harpy eagles have traditionally been placed in the subfamily Buteoninae together with the buzzard-hawks (buteonine hawks) and harriers. Some authors may treat these groups as tribes of the Buteoninae; Lerner & Mindellproposed separating the eagle groups into their own subfamilies of Accipitridae.

Fish eagles

Sea eagles or fish eagles take fish as a large part of their diets, either fresh or as carrion.

Proposed subfamily Haliaeetinae. Genera: HaliaeetusIchthyophaga.

Some authors include Gypohierax angolensis, the "vulturine fish eagle" (also called the palm-nut vulture) in this group. However, genetic analyses indicate it is related to a grouping of NeophronGypaetusEutriorchis(Egyptian vulturebearded vulture (lammergeier), and Madagascan serpent eagle).

The fish eagles have a close genetic relationship with Haliastur and Milvus; the whole group is only distantly related to the Buteo group.

Booted eagles

Booted eagle, in flight.

Booted eagles or "true eagles" have feathered tarsi (lower legs).

Tribe Aquililae or proposed subfamily Aquilinae. Genera: AquilaHieraaetusSpizaetusOroaetusSpizasturNisaetus; IctinaetusLophoaetusPolemaetus; and Stephanoaetus.

Snake eagles

Snake or serpent eagles are, as the name suggests, adapted to hunting reptiles.

  • Subfamily Circaetinae. Genera: CircaetusSpilornis,DryotriorchisTerathopius.
  • Eutriorchis (subfamily Gypaetinae or Circaetinae).
  • Despite filling the niche of a snake eagle, genetic studies suggest that the Madagascan serpent eagle Eutriorchisis not related.

    Harpy eagles

Harpy eagles or "giant forest eagles" are large eagles that inhabit tropical forests. The group contains two to six species, depending on the author. Although these birds occupy similar niches, and have traditionally been grouped together, they are not all related: the solitary eagles are related to the black-hawks, and the Philippine eagle to the snake eagles.

  • Harpy eagles (proposed subfamily Harpiinae)
  • Harpia harpyjaharpy eagle  Central and South America.
  • Morphnus guianensiscrested eagle  Central and South America.
  • Harpyopsis novaeguineaePapuan eagle  New Guinea.
  • Philippine eagle
  • Pithecophaga jefferyiPhilippine eagle  Philippines.
  • Solitary eagles
  • Chaco eagle or crowned solitary eagle,Buteogallus (formerly Harpyhaliaetuscoronatus  South America.
  • Solitary eagle or montane solitary eagle,Buteogallus (formerly Harpyhaliaetussolitarius  South America.

Odonla Ilaje, Ondo: A Village That Lives On Water But Can Barely Get Water - Travel
    ~1.6 mins read

A visit to Odonla, one of the many villages spread out along the long Atlantic coastal line of Ilaje, Ondo state with a combined projected population of over 391,200 people in an area of about 1,357km2, will certainly open your eyes wider to the untold realities of the dwellers of such riverine community.

Expectedly, fishing is their major economic preoccupation & related activities to such can be seen ongoing as far as your eyes can take your curiorisity. Do not bother to think about gifting these passionate locals a car, they might not really appreciate it; not because they are ungrateful people by nature but the fact is glaring - cars can't move on water. Both the old, young & even the females could be seen paddling their canoes of different sizes for different purposes.

Soon as you get on a boat for a ride into the riverine community, the sight of filling stations elevated slightly above the water tide would surely fascinate you. Churches, schools, bars & guest houses are also not far-fetched. You're used to hawkers on the land right? They aren't shy of such means of moving their wares & supplies too like Bread, Satchet Water, Bean Cake, fishes etc from one place to another in search of willing buyers. Potable water is very scarce, since the water they live on is already polluted by oil spillage. They buy a satchet of water as high as N40 depending on how cold it is needed. They travel for a long distance in search of usable water on slim canoes which are at the mercy of the water torrent depending on whether it would be gentle on a fateful day or rather turbulent.

Suprisingly, you cannot take anything away from them when it comes to enterpreneurship skills & a resillient spirit against the background of their seemingly "harsh" environment. One of their beloved sons, Orioye Benedict Gbayisemore, even won a National MSME Award, an initiative from the Office of the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo. He was gifted a brand new car & a cheque of five hundred thousand naira.

The Village to Villa success story of Orioye Benedict, a young fisherman from such remote riverine area is a living testimony that the Nigerian youth can still strive to emulate even in the murky and hopeless situations of life!

Barcelona's situation is not helped by a reported total debt of $1million, according to Forbes magazine.

How To Turn That Friendship Into A Relationship.
    ~13.3 mins read

Friends before lovers. Its beautiful when it blossoms into a relationship, but messy when it mutates into a bitter divorce-like separation. Ive experienced both. But it was the lessons from the messy romance that made the beautiful one possible.

On the night Sarah and I ended our relationship, we had only been dating for nineteen days. Typically, you wouldnt call that a relationship, but we had been friends for two years before we started to date, and we acted like boyfriend/girlfriend long before we became a couple.

The night we first kissed, it seemed like the logical next step. We had started as work buddies spending late nights together dealing with linen emergencies at a hotel. Soon, we became best friends, chilling by ourselves at bars, restaurants, and quiet corners of Central Park.

Each day, it seemed, we grew more affectionate with each other but carefully treaded the one-way turnstile that separates friends from lovers.

Then, one night, were hanging out at her apartment, debating what well do for dinner while cuddling in the corner of her couch. Thats when we kiss.

For a while, we stick to kissing and touching but remain fully clothed. We were just friends, we reasoned. Lets not go too far since we havent discussed the next steps. It sounds ridiculous now, but that night, it made a lot of sense.

The plan eventually failed. We skipped dinner, opting to migrate to her bedroom instead.

The next morning, I asked what it meant for us. Our status remained unresolved, but we agreed to go out on a date a few days later.

That date solidified our status, but something felt off. We now had the label of couple, but Sarah seemed torn like she wanted to desire a relationship but couldnt convince herself.

After two weeks, she asked if we could go back to being friends. I said I couldnt, so she promised to give our relationship more thought. A few days later, we parted ways. It would be four years before we communicated again.

The truth is, we both handled that situation poorly. But Im grateful for that experience because I learned much about navigating these delicate romances.

Two years after Sarah, I fell in love with another friend. Only this time, we did everything right. Eighteen years later, were still together.

Six things to know if you fall in love with a friend

    1. The one strategy that always fails.

If youve developed feelings for a friend, dont hit them with an ultimatum: either we become a couple, or we never speak again.Even if they do desire you as a lover, is that how you want to begin a relationship?

Once you develop feelings, you may not be able to continue as friends. Thats okay. Have a mature conversation if you feel theres a chance your friend shares a romantic interest, and prepare yourself for an answer you wont like. Decide what kind of friendship would be healthy for you if theres a mismatch of feelings.

    2. Sometimes you only get one shot.

One night, on my way home from my parents, I received a text message from my future wife we were friends at the time.

    Meet me at American Trash.

She had announced a few days before that shed be moving cross country. I figured the opportunity to make something happen had passed.

The bar was across the street from me, so I figured Id go for a beer, say hello, and go back home.

That night, we kissed at around 2 AM the start of our relationship, which has continued for 18 years. Had I passed up that opportunity, it likely never would have happened.

There will always be a final shot. Sometimes, you only get one. Dont squander your opportunities.

    3. Your relationship could make someone the third wheel.

When Sarah and I had our fling, we were part of a group of three friends who hung out often. This dynamic made things awkward for the third person, especially when it ended.

When I started dating my wife, she too was part of a group of friends. It was a larger group seven people but I still treaded cautiously because I didnt want to disrupt our social circle for what might have been another quick fling followed by hurt feelings.

If you love the other person more than your social circle, then go for it. But be mindful and respectful of the impact on mutual friends.

    4. Youll never go back to the way things were.

One of two outcomes will happen. Youll live happily ever after, or your romance will fail.

Never assume youll go back to the way things were before. If your coupling ends badly, someone will feel hurt. That person will likely shun contact with you, at least for a while.

Even if you avoid crossing the friend/lover line, once you realize youve fallen in love, your friendship changes because your feelings for each other have changed.

Sure, exceptions happen, and you may go back to being buddies, but thats rare.

If you both share a romantic interest, dont pass up the opportunity for something life-changing to save something that no longer exists.

    5. Pseudo dates can boost your confidence.

When two friends of the opposite sex develop feelings for each other, theyre often hesitant to announce their feelings.

Besides the risk of rejection, theres a risk of injuring the friendship, so we keep our crush a secret. In my experience with friendships turned relationships, I noticed a commonality a sign we saw each other as more than buddies.

We went on pseudo-dates the kind of date an established couple would go on but without the expectation or pressure of any romantic play afterward. Theres always light affection on these dates. Examples include handholding, frequent hugs, and cuddling on the couch while watching a movie.

If you find yourself going on pseudo-dates, its a sign you both harbor unspoken feelings for each other. Use that as a confidence builder to have that conversation.

    6. The weirdness test.

When I started dating Sarah, it felt natural, like we should be together. When she remarked that it felt weird, I suggested, Maybe you just need to get used to the idea.

Perhaps if I had recognized the significance of her statement, we could have ended things amicably.

Like any other kind of relationship, when it works, it feels right. When its not there, your gut tells you.

If you or your friend makes a similar remark or experiences the same sense of weirdness, dont rationalize it away. You wont come to some grand epiphany while on a spiritual quest. I know it happens in movies, but in real life, not so much.

Friendships between men and women sometimes lead to a desire for something more. When it works, its a beautiful thing. Even when it fails, its better than wondering what might have been.

Steve Jobs' sandals sold for $218,750 at auction. Their present odor is unknown.

Steve Jobs' Worn-out Birkenstocks Sell For $218,000 At Auction
    ~1.2 mins read

    Steve Jobs

Sandals worn by Steve Jobs in the early days of Apple sold for $218,750 at an auction in New York City on Sunday.

The brown suede Birkenstock Arizonas were worn by Jobs in the 1970s and 1980s during "many pivotal moments in Apple's history," according to the auction house.

It's the highest price ever paid for a pair of sandals at auction, Julien's Auctions executive director Martin Nolan told NPR, and a record for footwear at the auction house.

The sandals came from the collection of Mark Sheff, who managed Jobs' Albany, Calif., estate in the 1980s. Other items associated with Jobs have been sold at auctions in recent years, sometimes reaching hefty prices an Apple-1 Computer prototype from the mid-1970s fetched $677,196.

The sandals were previously sold for a mere $2,000 at auction in 2016, Nolan said.
The winning bidder did not want their name disclosed, but it was sold in the room at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square, according to Nolan. The runner-up bid was from a potential buyer in China.

This is far from the most someone has paid for footwear at auction.

Nike Air Ships worn by Michael Jordan in 1984 sold for $1.47 million a year ago. Black Nikes worn by Kanye West at the 2008 Grammys sold for $1.8 million last year as well.
The auction also included an NFT of images of the Birkenstocks as part of the sale.

But perhaps the most pressing question about the sandals, seeing as the auction house notes that they show "heavy wear": Do they smell?

Nolan only answered that they "do smell ... of success."
