Scene 13

At the office

Collin walks to Mr. Gabriel's office, opens the door and sees that Adanne is there with Mr. Gabriel)

Mr. Gabriel: Welcome Mr. Collin.

Take a seat. (Collin seats and Mr. Gabriel continues) I called you here for an important meeting. First of all, I want to thank you for a job well done.

You have handled the advertisement team alongside your statistics team very well. As you know, Miss. Adanne's probation period is over. Hence, she will need to step back in and return to her duties. In that regard, you will be needed to hand over the leadership staff to her. I'm guessing you understand what I mean.

Collin: First of all, thank you sir, but concerning handling the office back to her, I don't think there's any need for that. (Mr. Gabriel and Adanne have worried expressions) It is obvious that I am more competent than Miss.

Adanne here. You saw how I improved search response by twenty percent...

Adanne: (Cutting him short) With the help of my blueprint Mr. Collin!

Mr. Gabriel: Okay, everyone calm down. The board's decision to send both of you to the new branch stands. As a result, you will have to learn to get along with each other.

Collin: Even after her suspension, the board still wants to send her to the new branch? Sir, don't you think there's been a mistake?

Adanne: (Shocked by his statement) Mr. Collin!

Mr. Gabriel: Regarding Miss.

Adanne's case, the alleged competitors revealed that they haven't had contact with any GreenHill employee concerning any inconclusive plan. They also pointed out that their company's statistics on the recovered document was outdated. Whoever was framing Adanne didn't do a clean job, and that's a great thing. Nonetheless, we are still working to find the culprit. For the time being, Adanne has been cleared.

Collin: (Suddenly anxious and fidgety) W..what, Really?

Mr. Gabriel: So you see Mr. Collin, this decision is not debatable.

Collin: That changes nothing sir. I am declining the offer, I am not working under Adanne as a supervisor, she cannot be my manager!

Mr. Gabriel: Mr.

Collin! The only reason I am letting your sorry ass get that position is because of the board's insistence. It is obvious where your loyalty lies, and it's not with me.

Collin: (Laughs) Loyalty? To you?

Adanne: (Already uncomfortable with the contention between the two men) You know what, just carry on...I'll leave you two to it! (She storms out of the office, closes the door behind them and leans on it while sobbing quietly)

Mr. Gabriel & Collin: (Both shout in unison) Adanne!

 

(Mr. Gabriel tries to run after her but Collin grabs his hand roughly)

Collin: (Dropping the honorifics) Stop! Don't act like you care!

Mr. Gabriel: (Shocked at the sudden disrespect) What are you talking about? 

Collin: I know your type, born with a silver spoon, have everything on a platter of gold and think you can get away with anything.

Mr.

Gabriel: (Removing his hand from Collin's grip) Mr. Collin! I think you are crossing the line...

Collin: (Cuts him short) Yeah what does it matter! we are roughly the same age, the difference between you and me is our status. And I know with every being in me that I deserve that position you are standing in a million times than you do.

Mr. Gabriel: (Laughs) With that attitude? Collin! You deserve nothing! The only reason I'm even conceiving the idea of promoting you as supervisor in the new branch is because of those board of directors who have commended some of your work. But you wanna know what's more important than impressing people with commendable projects? Consideracy, Humanity, and Integrity! That's the difference between you and Adanne. She's just as hard-working, but she's different, in a good way. You Collin, can never get there, you can't ever be half as good as her. You wanna know why? Because you've sold yourself to the devil. You've become like a beast just to attain power, position and glory.

But not on my watch!

Collin: (Laughs) Okay, I see what's going on here...you like Adanne. This explains everything. The compliments, the commendation, and even promotion. I worked under your team for six years without a single compliment or commendation. (With an angry look) Adanne's been here for like what? A year! And what? Commendation, promotion? What's funny about everything is the fact that I brought that girl here! I worked out her recruitment and she steals my shine? You think you like Adanne? I love her! Yes you heard me right, I don't just like her, I love her and that's why I'm doing all this.

Mr. Gabriel: (Shocked and confused) Love?

Collin: (Continues) She has lost her way, I'm steering her back towards the right direction. I should be the top earner, I should be the head! Her position is to be my secretary, my assistant! That was the original plan. Even if she didn't realize it, she broke the deal, she didn't keep her own end of the bargain. And it got me so pissed, I had to resort to unusual methods, just to bring her back.

But all Adanne sees is you! You have poisoned her mind. You spoilt our perfectly orchestrated plan.

(Adanne who had been standing by the corner and listening to their conversation the whole time cuts in to their surprise)

Adanne: (In tears and with an annoyed tone, she addresses Collin) If that is love, it's an evil and toxic type. A love that will make you hurt me to prove yourself? Then I'm not interested!

To think you did all this just to push me under, I am highly disappointed. I can't believe I once considered you a friend. If you truly loved me for even a second, you would have wanted nothing more than see me prosper in all my endeavors. But you want to be on top to my detriment. You are indeed a devil. I don't ever want to see you again.

(She storms out in tears, Mr.

Gabriel goes after her as Collin stands there in shock)
