Any chance of this season’s Formula One world championship playing the Queensberry game has almost certainly vanished in the tumultuous title race. The Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and the Red Bull of Max Verstappen have been boxing hard, but it appears like this has now devolved into a cage fight.

The stewards’ decision to reject the review questioning Verstappen’s driving in pushing Hamilton wide in Brazil would be applauded by the Dutchman. If it had gone against him, he may have lost points or grid positions.

Instead, he holds his 14-point advantage over Hamilton with three races remaining at the Losail circuit in Doha. The two drivers are remaining cordial, but their team principals are engaged in a heated argument.

Toto Wolff of Mercedes and Christian Horner of Red Bull sat just four feet apart at their press conference in Qatar, but the gap was a chasm as they staked their claims while resolutely avoiding eye contact. Was there any respect, any relationship between the two teams left after a campaign that lasted 19 rounds and involved accusations of malfeasance on and off the track from both sides?
