The world is constantly evolving and so are the masquerades or the egunguns, as they are widely referred to among the Yoruba people of Nigeria. Not only are the masquerades walking about with mobile phones, they have evolved to the point where they now halt the usual Masquerade parades just to collect phone numbers.

A video which has surfaced online of a masquerade stopping by the road to take the phone number of a beautifully endowed girl who caught its eyes, has caused several hilarious reactions.

Before this time, masquerades were often regarded very highly. They were regarded as spirits and carried with them an air of reverence. In fact, masquerades among almost all the tribes in Nigeria were seen as the link between the spiritual world and the physical.

Well, that was then as things have vastly changed and masquerades have come a long way since then as they now openly stop their traditional parades to ask girls out or better still whip out their mobile devices and ask the girls to dial their numbers into their phones.

The video in question was shared by a popular Twitter influencer and a bestselling author known as Japhet Omojuwa. He tweeted "This Masquerade couldn't trust his assistant with this number? Ara Orun wey get flesh and blood."

In the video, the Masquerade which should be a symbol of the spirits was in a parade along with its followers. Drama then set in when the Masquerade saw a beautiful girl and decided that tradition was not so important and the spirits could probably carry their messages to the living, as he stopped and began to plead with the girl for her WhatsApp number.

Some persons who commented on the incident decried the state of our falling cultures and values. They pointed out that it was wrong for a masquerade which should symbolize the spirits to condescend to the extent of begging girls for their numbers while it is still in its full traditional regalia.

Others pointed out that the Masquerade did not do anything wrong, saying that it was a human being that was inside the regalia after all and the person inside definitely still has feelings and emotions.
