Best Face Oils To Restore And Renew Your Skin -

Considering many of us put a lot of effort into trying to minimise the oiliness of our skin, it may feel counterintuitive to use a face oil.

But a blend of natural oils – such as evening primrose, jojoba or sweet almond – packed with antioxidants, vitamins and essential fatty acids, can regulate sebum production if your skin is oily, and nourish and lock in moisture for those who tend to be dry.

The right one for your skin will sink in easily with a little massage and not sit on the skin longer than a few hours; if it hasn't absorbed by then, it's probably too heavy.

Your skin should feel deeply moisturised and plumped a few hours after application, so oils are perfect for relieving tight, dry skin, and you'll see a cumulative improvements in skin softness and sebum regulation with repeat use.

Oils do tend to be more expensive than most skincare, as their simplicity means there's nowhere to hide and or to pad out a formula with cheaper ingredients. However, you only need a drop or two a day, so they do last longer than you'd expect.

Apply your face oil as the last step in your pre-bed routine, as a layer of oil locks in moisture from other products applied (such as moisturiser or hyaluronic acid serum); in the reverse, if you apply other products afterwards, they won't be able to get to where they need to be. Due to the time they take to absorb, most oils aren't a suitable base for make-up.

Elemis superfood facial oil, 15ml
The Elemis superfood facial oil, £45 will leave you with plump and glowy skin come morning
We'd never come across skincare we wanted to eat until we tried this. Elemis's "superfood" range smells green and healthy, like everything you know you should probably be putting in your body but neglect in favour of pizza. It contains antioxidant and omega-rich broccoli, flax seed, carrot and rosemary oils, plus multiple nut oils for skin that feels protected and nourished.

Cinque Terre
It's quite a heavy oil so will sit on the skin for a few hours before being completely absorbed, and you'll have plump and glowy skin come morning.

Kate Somerville dilo oil restorative treatment, 30ml
This is an incredibly lightweight and fast-absorbing oil, so much so that we'll happily use it before applying make-up on particularly dry-skin days. It contains dilo oil, which is rich in lipids to help the skin restore its natural barrier, as well as vitamin and omega-rich pumpkin seed oil and rosemary leaf extract, which protects from free-radical damage. The scent is herbal and almost liquorice-like, but doesn't linger long, and skin is left feeling well conditioned and not greasy.

La Mer the renewal oil, 30ml
There's no denying that this whopper of a price-tag leaves this oil firmly in the luxury category, but if you can afford it, it's a stunningly good formula, perfectly hitting the balance between nourishment and weight. After just one use, skin is more radiant and incredibly soft. Its mega-long ingredients list encompasses meadowfoam, sweet almond, jojoba, eucalyptus and sesame oils, plus a few more besides.

Sunday Riley juno antioxidant+ superfood facial oil, 30ml
We were first drawn to this oil because of its pleasing two-tone yellow and pink bottle, but we keep going back to it for the ingredient list. It contains a blend of nine oils – blackberry, blueberry, raspberry, cranberry, grape, carrot, cumin, broccoli and meadowfoam – and nothing else, and is rich in omegas, amino acids and brightening vitamin C.

A restorative, protecting pep-up for tired skin, we'd particularly recommend it for city-dwellers.

Sisley black rose precious facial oil, 25ml
Considering the price, "precious" is certainly an appropriate product name, but this oil from French brand Sisley has sold at too fast a rate and topped too many awards lists to ignore it. It has an incredibly thin, fast-absorbing texture (you'll be good to put on make-up 30 minutes after application) that belies how deeply nourishing it is. Skin is left soft and smooth, without a dry patch in sight; perfect for parched winter skin.

Balance Me rose otto face oil, 30ml
Natural brand Balance Me has had a packaging makeover and we're loving its new, colourful, simple style. Its bestselling rose otto oil doesn't feel greasy or heavy, restores moisture and plumpness to papery or tight skin, and is nut-free. It contains a small amount of citronellol, a fragrance chemical found in plants, giving it a slight whiff of insect-repellant that some might find off-putting, but it just reminds us of balmy summer holiday nights.

Drunk Elephant virgin marula luxury facial oil, 15ml
We're still going mad for Drunk Elephant's cult formulas and brightly coloured packaging two years after its launch in the UK, and this oil's key ingredient inspired the brand's name: there's a myth that elephants become drunk after eating marula fruit. This pure marula oil – it's the only item in the ingredient list – is high in omegas 6 and 9, and in vitamin E, and leaves skin soft, supple and reduces redness and blotchiness.

SuperFacialist rose miracle makeover facial oil, 30ml
As with many SuperFacialist products, this oil holds its own against many far more expensive products fairly well. Its blend of avocado, sunflower seed and sweet almond oil is hydrating and replenishing; where it differs from more expensive formulas is that its titular ingredient, rose, comes 11th in the ingredients list, meaning it contains less rose than other formulas.

But at less than £20, it's a perfect choice for teens, or those wanting to try out a face oil for the first time without spending big.

Votary intense night oil, 50ml
Votary is a powerhouse brand for facial oils, its founder Arabella Preston having been one of their earliest champions. Its intense night oil is the most pricey of its offering (most are around the £65 mark), but it offers something special for mature skin. Along with rose, avocado, tomato seed and rosehip oils, it contains retinoid, which encourages your skin's natural turnover to smooth texture and fine lines and leave skin soft and plump.

Kiehl's midnight recovery concentrate, 5oml
An oldie but a goodie, a bottle of midnight recovery concentrate rarely leaves our bedside table: it's a saviour for skin rendered dull by too many late nights or a little too much to alcohol. The blend of lavender and evening primrose oils smells relaxing – take a moment to inhale from your fingertips before you apply – and also contains squalene, derived from olives, which is intensely moisturising. It's a product we really miss when we don't have it to hand: our tester's skin is noticeable redder and rougher without it.
